Devils off after Game 1 loss

The Devils are not scheduled to practice today, but  will have a media availability with Pete De Boer and selected players.

Numbers Don’t Lie: Odds against Devils

Since the best-of-7 format was introduced in 1939, teams winning Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals have gone on to win the Cup in 55 of 72 seasons (76.4%).

Last season, the Boston Bruins lost Game 1, but went on to win the Cup in 7 games.

Postgame

Devils coach Pete DeBoer said after the game that he believes the Devils didn’t deserve to win Game 1.

Katie Strang of ESPN NY tweeted, “Couple of Devils players said they thought that was team’s worst game of playoffs, guys fighting nerves at the start.”

Martin Brodeur said after the game, “The ice was bad, we made turnovers, we panicked w/ the puck…it was a weird game. Not a great game for hockey, that’s for sure.”

Thoughts after Game 1

Couple thoughts after tonight’s loss:

• I know, it hurts, but the Devils need to regroup and come out firing in Game 2, like they did against the Flyers and Rangers.

• The Devils came out flat until they scored their first goal (late in the second period).

• The Devils need to take more shots on Jonathan Quick. 18 shots in the entire game in not enough.

• Too much passing in the offensive zone in the first period. Overpassing, trying to be fancy. Just need to shoot the puck.

• The Devils need to bury wide open shots. David Clarkson missed in the first period, then Zach Parise had a chance, but got blocked and last, Mark Fayne missed a wide open net.

• Ilya Kovalchuk needs to step up if the Devils want to win. He needs to get involved. He had no shots and no hits.

• Devils power play was awful (first PP was okay). 0 for 2 with two shots.

• Martin Brodeur was great but the first goal he allowed was too weak from his standpoint.

Final (OT): Devils 1, Kings 2

The LA Kings take a 1-0 series lead after a 3-2 overtime win in Game 1.

The Facts: 

• Anton Volchenkov scored his first playoff goal since Game 3 of 2007 Stanley Cup finals when he was with the Ottawa Senators (vs. Ducks).

• The Kings outshot the Devils 25-18.

• Martin Brodeur made 23 saves on 25 shots.

• The Devils were 0 for 2 on the power play and 1 for 1 for their penalty kill.

• David Clarkson and Patrik Elias picked up the assists on Volchenkov’s goal at 18:48 of the second period.

• Ryan Carter and Zach Parise, both 3, led Devils with shots on goals.

Numbers Don’t Lie: Overtime Edition

Devils are 4-1 in overtime games in the playoffs. Kings are 2-0. Both teams advanced to Stanley Cup Finals on overtime wins, according to Tom Gulitti of Fire and Ice.

Devils’ game-winning goals were scored by by Travis Zajac, Alexei Ponikarovsky and two by Adam Henrique.

MSG Plus to air postgame show

MSG Plus will have a 60-minute postgame show after all Stanley Cup Finals games.

TV: The game will be televised on NBC and broadcast on Bloomberg 1130 AM.

Notes:

• Martin Brodeur will make his 189th consecutive playoff start and 200th of his career. On the other side of the rink, Vezina Trophy finalist Jonathan Quick t will get the start.

• The Devils will go with the same lineup as in Game 6 against the New York Rangers, according to Tom Gulitti of Fire and Ice.

• The Kings are 8-0 on the road in this year’s playoffs.

• The Devils have been off for four days while the Kings have been off for seven days.
